暗访,即秘密的、隐蔽的走访。《明史·周新传》曾记载,周新在进行暗访时,冲撞了县令,县令将他送进狱中。周新又在狱中暗访,并从囚犯们的口中得知该县令贪污的实情。试想,假如周新盛装驾临,单靠像如今的一些领导干部,看总结听汇报来了解下情,体察民情,那结果恐怕是另一番模样了?
