Since the beginning of this year, the export of Chinese aquatic products to South Korea has soared. According to statistics from the ROK, from January to February of this year, China’s exports of aquatic products to South Korea amounted to 81 million U.S. dollars, an increase of 273% year-on-year, accounting for 48.5% of South Korea’s market share. Among them, frozen squid and frozen squid account for more than 80% of South Korea’s total imports, exceeding US$6 million, while imports of frozen croaker, barley, and blood squid are almost identical to Chinese products. Last year, due to sluggish domestic demand, imports of Korean aquatic products fell by 44.3%. Recently, they began to recover in large quantities. Imports from January to February reached US$167 million, an increase of 140% over the same period of last year. The main reason for the large import of aquatic products is the sharp decline in fisheries in the relevant sea areas due to the impact of the Korean-Chinese fishery agreement, and offshore fish-producing areas.
