The development of folk life research in the United States has a long history of hundreds of years, and hundreds, if not hundreds, of its collections. Computer technology is also a deep-seated change in the collection of folk life development, maintenance, access and use. Three research and documentation projects based around the Michigan State University Museum are creatively using technology to generate and preserve collections of traditional culture, quilt covers, the Michigan Stained Glass Census and the Michigan Barn and Farm Survey . At the same time, these projects are using technology in new ways to attract and support educational and academic use of these collections. These three projects have demonstrated the fundamental importance of identifying and stabilizing collections of world folk life and have made it possible to access and generally search the world’s collections of folk life.
