Objective To investigate the effect of 500 kV substations on the melatonin levels of workers exposed to power frequency electromagnetic fields. Methods Totally 81 inspectors of 500 kV substations were selected as the contact group and 76 administrators of the corresponding power supply bureau as the control group. Serum melatonin levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results The levels of melatonin were (613.4 ± 162.8) ng / L in the EMF exposure group and (583.4 ± 145.2) ng / L in the control group, respectively. There was no significant difference in the levels of melatonin between the exposure group and the control group P> 0.05). Conclusion This study did not find that 500kV substation power frequency electromagnetic field exposure had a significant effect on serum melatonin levels.
