中印兩國間第一個贸易協定經過友好和諧的商談後,於十月十四日在新德裏簽字.協定中规定雙方採取一切適宜措施以擴展兩國間的貿易並具體規定了雙方給予爲數達二百多種的商品以進出口的便利(對其他商品則並無限制之意),還规定了對雙方都便利的付款辦法.協定有效期爲兩年,期满前可由雙方談判予以延長或修訂.這一協定是指導兩國關係的五項原则在經濟贸易關係上的具體化.締結這一协定的目的,正如兩國贸易談判公報所指出的:「在於加强中印兩國政府和人民間现存的友誼,並在平等互利的基礎上發展兩國間的贸易.」發展這種貿易關係是兩國人民的共同願望,它對兩國經濟的繁榮和兩國人民生活的改善有着重要意義.中印兩國的貿易關係具有兩千多年的歴史.紀元前二世紀時,中國人就曾到南印度,带去黄金和絲綢,带回明珠和玉石.中國唐宋兩代數百年的史籍中,關於中印間商業往還的记載頗多,當時的貿易主要是絲綢與香料的交换.
