Photomechanical response of amorphous polymerfilms containing azobenzene chromophores in side chainsis studied. By invoking the trans-cis isomerization mech-anism, the steady-state deformation of the film induced byuniform illumination of linearly polarized light is obtainedanalytically. The deformation turns out to be of entropicorigin, produced to compensate the entropy decrease due tophoto-induced redistribution of azobenzene chromophoresnormal to the polarization direction. The predicted elonga-tion direction of the film is consistent with previous experi-mental observations.
