富兰克林因被载入史册而千古留名。作为一名作家、发明家和政治家,二百年来他的趣闻轶事广为流传,成为佳话。富兰克林十岁辍学,但从未荒废过学业,对他来说,书籍是打开幸福之门的钥匙,是取得成功的关键,是最可宝贵的财富。小时候,他有个伙伴在书店当伙计,常借书给他看。为了及时归还,不让书店主人发现,富兰克林一读就是大半夜。他不是自己学好了就算完,而是把做学问当作一项社会活动。在他的自传中,富兰克林记叙了自己如何组织每周五晚上的“读书会”活动,以提高全体参加者的思想修养:
Franklin was named after the annals of history. As a writer, inventor and politician, his anecdotes have been widely circulated and made into stories. Franklin dropped out of school at the age of ten, but never abandoned his studies. For him, books are the key to opening the door to happiness. It is the key to success and the most valuable asset. When he was young, he had a companion to be a buddy at the bookstore and often borrowed books to show him.
