As most people had expected, after a seven-hour debate, the U.S. Department of Commerce held a hearing on the market economy status of China on June 3, ending with widespread opposition by the U.S. enterprises, trade associations and trade union representatives to recognizing China’s market economy status End. The 10 votes cast by the 10 representatives of the United States indicate that China is in the largest single-country market in the world. The “market entry” by the United States will not be easy. Among the hot topics of China’s economic diplomacy in 2004, the issue of “non-market economy status” has undoubtedly become one of the focuses. With a little care, it is not hard to see that almost all Chinese leaders have asked foreign governments to recognize China’s full market economy status as soon as possible on different occasions. Due to much concern, some people even joked that the issue of “non-market economy status” has become the “Taiwan issue” in China’s economic diplomacy. While fully affirming the positive progress made in the issue of “non-market economy status,” we need to calmly think about this issue accurately and in a reasonable manner.
