狄百瑞是美国新儒学大家,也是欧美汉学界的领军人物。他并不是以“他者”的思维看待中国文化,而是从中国文化内部审视当代美国乃至当代世界。狄百瑞思想的源头是宋明理学,其实际取法对象是黄宗羲和钱穆,两人的民主政治观念以及开放的思想史方法为狄百瑞思想的形成奠定了基础。狄百瑞在强调古今、中西对话的前提下,突出“自由”与“社群”的重要性,并深入讨论两者的对话关系,以及对当代西方社会的意义。与此同时,他也对宋明理学存在的政治性维度心存疑虑,主张通过“宗教性”改造,以及对“为己之学”的强调,实现儒家思想的现代转化,从而彰显其对现实世界的干预性。除此之外,狄百瑞赋予教育以重要职责,在其看来,“核心课程”是实现儒家思想世界化、现代化、现实化的实践手段。
