America’s long national love affair[强烈兴趣] with British royals has grown to the point that it even embraces[欣然接受] fakes.
Bored with PBS注 documentaries[纪录片] about the queen? Want more Downton Abbey? Network execs[执行官] have just the programming for you:
—I Wanna Marry Harry, a Fox reality show about a dozen easily-confused[糊涂的] American women competing for the heart of an Englishman they’re told is the prince himself, Harry.
—The Royals, E!’s first scripted series[系列剧], a Gossip Girl style series about a fictional[虚构的] and troubled British royal family, starring Elizabeth Hurley.
—Almost Royal, BBC America’s comedy about a pair of funny aristocratic[贵族的] siblings[兄弟姊妹] (fake relatives of the British royals) on their first trip to the US and their curious[不寻常的] interactions[互动] with the locals.
Why now? Programmers say the wildly popular young princes William and Harry, Duchess Kate and baby Prince George have changed everything.
“Suddenly royal is cool again,” says Jeff Olde, executive vice president[执行副总裁] of programming and development for E! “The royal family has moved from the stuffy[古板的] older generation, and suddenly you’ve got the hottest couple on the planet.”
America has long been interested in titled types, says Perry Simon, general manager of BBC America, who remembers the massive ratings[评级] for the wedding of Prince Charles and Diana Spencer in 1981.
“There’s no limit to the fascination[入迷] that Americans have with the British royal family,” Simon says.
Why? Maybe because it’s the one thing that America doesn’t have, says Danny Fenton, an executive producer with Zig Zag Productions, which is behind the Marry Harry show.
For E!, with its young audience, it’s a “natural extension[延伸] of our brand,” says Olde. “Our ratings go up around royal events. Our viewers would love to be inside of that party, inside a world as glossy[徒有其表的] and beautiful and fun as they can imagine.”
And there’s something for every audience in these shows: Smart British comedy for the highclass BBC America crowd. Palace-and-servants fantasies[幻想的情境] for the Downton Abbey lovers. Family drama for the soap-loving audience. And opportunities to feel superior[有优越感的] to those snooty[傲慢的] Brits, whose classy[上等的] accents hide the fact they can be clueless[无知的] too.
What’s not to like?
