Chinese and other Asians have played a structural role in developing Australia’s national consciousness. With them as racial / cultural other, the Australian nation takes this self-definition and the Australians’ fears and desires have been cast in the projection. Today, Australian and Chinese writers use shadow images to explore their place in Australian national life. They ask themselves: To what extent can we imagine the fusion of Asians and Australians? Fusion of attention and intentions? Integration of reproduction and self-construction? Are Chinese identities in conflict and conflict? Is it possible for Chinese identities to become one? A happier mixture of impurities?
