从罗马帝国说起罗马帝国国势强盛,在古代世界曾称雄数世纪。鼎盛时,疆土辽阔,东起幼发拉底河上游,南抵撒哈拉大沙漠,西濒大西洋,北达不列颠岛中部、莱茵河和多瑙河,地跨欧、亚、非三洲,整个地中海成了它的内海。“罗马帝国”之名广泛传布,以致有人一提“罗马”便连上“帝国”。在稿件中就有这种误解的反映。例如: 公元前二世纪,罗马帝国开始大规模的征服活动。古罗马帝国独裁者恺撒(公元前102/100～前44)的《高卢战纪》中有大量古代高卢人活动的记载。
