In the two decades prior to 1985, Singapore was known for its continued economic growth. From 1965 to 1984, the average annual growth rate of gross domestic product was as high as 9.9%. In the past two years, the economy of Singapore has been turning around rapidly. The growth rate of gross domestic product in 1985 plummeted to -1.8% from 8.2% in the previous year. The main direct cause of the severe economic downturn in Singapore is the downturn in the manufacturing sector, which is in turn related to some policy mistakes made by the Singapore government. This article attempts to reflect on Singapore’s economic development.
