假定性是一切戏剧活动的基本前提。它是演员与观众在进行戏剧活动之前约定俗成的规则。虽然假定性共存于一切戏剧艺术中,但是不同的戏剧艺术对此的表达方式截然不同。在中国传统戏曲中,演员是以“行当”为中介接触角色,以“程式”为中介向观众表演角色的行为与情感。这当中的“程式化”必然会造成演员与角色、角色与观众之间的距离,戏曲演员既无法也无需向观众掩饰自己正在扮演角色,这就决定了假定性在中国传统戏曲舞台上独特的表演方式。
