Objective To observe the effects of iron content and exercise on dietary NHE and other metal ions (sodium, magnesium, potassium, manganese, calcium, copper and zinc) in male rats hippocampus. Methods Sixty-five male SD rats were randomly divided into dietary low iron content group, standard iron content group and high iron content group, and each group was divided into exercise group and rest group. After feeding for 1 month with different iron content, the exercise group started swimming once a day for 5 days per week for 3 months. The rest group was the same as the corresponding exercise group except for exercise. After the last exercise, fasting for 24 h, venous blood samples were taken from venous blood under pentobarbital sodium anesthesia to measure the indexes of red blood cells and blood iron status. Whole brain was harvested and hippocampus was quickly isolated. The contents of NHI, sodium, magnesium, potassium, Manganese, calcium, copper, zinc content. Results Different dietary iron levels had effects on hemoglobin (Hb) and serum iron (SI) in rats. Exercise had effects on the content of calcium, copper and zinc in hippocampus. Different dietary iron levels had significant effects on calcium and copper in hippocampus of rats. Interaction between exercise and dietary iron levels on iron and copper contents in hippocampus of rats. CONCLUSION: Long-term exercise in rats with low iron content reduces the iron storage in the hippocampus of male rats. The effect of exercise on the calcium content in the hippocampus has nothing to do with the iron content in the diet, but the effect on the copper content is related to the iron content in the diet.
