HamidSavkuev’s sculpture works congeal the past time of thousands of years, and mix it into an endless eternity.
HamidSavkuev was born in 1964 in Kazakhstan, which today remains wandering mysterious power. In 1979 the family moved to Caucasus—— his family’s birthplace. The souls of ancestors always call us to approach to them sooner or later. Their calls become songs which are succeeded one by one. In these songs, beauty and wisdom change into traditions, soul and energy which come from the sacred mother earth.
Caucasus’ land has been a cradle that nurtured a variety of cultural——MAIGOP Culture, GOBAN Culture and TRIALET Culture. Hamid Savkuev drew nourishment from them and embodied them in his works.
For Hamid Savkuev, ancient material is closer to himself and easy to understand. Obviously, this artist tirelessly seeks cultural achievements of old Orient, Byzantine and medieval European, then turns them into hisr own myth.
For example, the work Mother——Guardian (Picture1) absorbs Chinese cultural elements, the plot of ancient Greek myth and the spirit of Christianity. The model of this work displays the theme of “Four Friends”which is very common in Chinese painting especially in the art form called “literati painting”. Vertical lines dominate the layout of the entire composition, flower decorations, sides of the decorative sculptures, and steeple of hats—— All these cause our association with plum, orchids, bamboo, and chrysanthemum. All of these Characterizations reflect the combination of aesthetics and ethics, and itself remind people of Confucius’“kindness”. The beautiful young woman in front of us seems to be showing her splendid attire. She elegantly holds her wave-shaped skirt, with her haughty body towering into the sky, her eyes focusing on the distant, and her clothes covering helpless children who are given “holy” invisible energy of the whole world. Can’t it remind us the story about the Virgin Mary, who opens her arms to protect her children? The relief of this sculpture creates a female-wolf with the drooping breasts, and this design makes the image more vivid. You will find it suggestive of the female-wolf karbidory who fed the Rome and the Luomula once you see it. Because of these, mother’s skirt has become a metaphorical symbol of a well-known hill or an impregnable wall and so on, with people regarding her as Mary in ancient Byzantine or Russia. Moreover the shape of the works Mother— Asylum itself is associated with a bell, a tireless alarm beating the human spirit.
The Works Summit of the World (Picture 2) triggers people’s philosophical thinking about bell. It is well known that the bell is the sign of mother-reproduction in many cultural phenomena, and in the past it always was viewed as the echo of the beat of the God’s heart by the Muslim and Hindu, while in China, it is named harmonious sound. All these understandings are interwoven in the works Summit of the World by an incredible form. The size of the Bell-shaped wooden base is bigger than the copper sculpture itself, a male modeling — a child holding a falcon. In fact, the sculptor makes the laws of the whole world into one unique formula. These works has the tendency of explanative energy, shows a three-band structure of the universe, and reveals the human’s social significance. Perhaps in ancient times this sculpture works could serve as a totem or a cinerary casket of remains of the dead. You can also find the theme on funeral rites in other works. To some extent, Sculpture Seeing Sky (Picture 3) and Double (Picture 4) make person recall the sarcophagus. The works Double reveals the image of death through a mold of sleep through details of the daily life, instead of putting the focus on the custom scene. Some of the works of Hami Savkuev have the traces of fate, such as works of Human bird (Picture 5), Fish (Picture 6), Make fire (Picture 7).
Even the works Dante (Picture 8) is also very close to the traditional funeral rites and the offer sacrifices. The sculptor can grab the instant and convey it to people:“…… feel more relaxed after a deep sigh, the mind endure fear for a long time, and the painful night is endless.” This sentence is extracted from God’s Comic in order to explain the transition process to the state of eternity. This terrible but meantime jolly experience always attract the sculptor, he is infatuated with the great history, then he finds back the perpetual story we have lost by his work.
