This article describes a 200Mb / s multi-service fiber local area network (LAN) with synchronous time division multiplexing (TDM) loop architecture. The LAN is formed by interconnecting a central management node with several service nodes using a fiber loop. Each service node has multiple communication channels. In TDM frames running continuously on the loop, the communication channel occupies the allocated available time slots. Each channel in the loop can provide a variety of independent communication channels at speeds of up to 140 Mb / s and various types of communication including point-to-point, ring, and broadcast. Ring mode is useful for supporting ring networks, such as Token Ring. Because each type of service can independently select the rate, access method, and mode of communication each requires, the LAN architecture is well-suited for the integration of multiple services including video, video, data and voice. In the course of development, various LSI-based high-speed hardware technologies have been successfully adopted and miniaturized LAN devices have been made.
