The advent of high-power semiconductors makes it possible to use inverters and AC motors in traction. Or synchronous or induction motors and several types of power converters may be considered. It is advantageous to select an induction motor and a pulse-width modulation inverter in the motor drive. According to the requirements of motor car performance, this article gives a general method of determining the size of PWM inverter and induction motor. This method yields the best system weight and cost for the smallest size inverter and license. The paper also discusses the effects of wheel size and regeneration energy optimization.
