OBJECTIVE: To verify the negative effects of violent games on helpful behaviors based on general learning models and to explore the impact of violent games on helpful behaviors after giving prosocial context. Methods: The tangram task and situation simulation tasks were used to measure the steady help-taking behavior and emergency help-taking behaviors of 86 third grade children. The types of games and the influence of gender on the behavior scores were also analyzed. Results: The types of games played a significant role in helping children with steady behavior (F = 6.17, P <0.01) and emergency help-taking behavior (F = 4.25, P <0.05), but not by gender. CONCLUSION: Support for a general learning model suggests that violent games have a negative effect on helpful behavior, but pro-social background can effectively reduce the negative impact of violent games on helpful behaviors.
