董其昌的“文人画”与“南北宗论”是中国美术史上最为重要的绘画理论之一,他系统地论述了山水画发展史上两种不同的艺术风格与美学思想,对中国山水画的发展产生了非常重大的影响。董其昌“南北宗论”的美学思想代表了中国传统艺术的美学观,这种美学思想是在中国传统文化的基础上产生的。在当代的艺术设计中,借鉴“南北宗论”的美学思想,将有助于艺术设计的民族化。
