At about 9 p.m. on October 18, 1973, a sudden knock on the White House building on the Martin Road outside Sydney sounded. Outside the gate gathered a large group of journalists who wanted to see Patrick White. He won the 1973 Nobel Prize for Literature - the first Australian writer ever to win this award.
