A striking geological phenomenon is spreading in late-Paleozoic coal-producing areas in western Henan (Figure 1). The newer rock series in the geologic age covered the coal-bearing rocks in an abnormal contact relationship. The structural features of the upper and lower contact surfaces are quite different, forming a “double-layer” structure of the coal-bearing basin profile. This phenomenon is now commonly known as the “epidermal structure.” For a long time, the essence of “epidermal structure” has been mixed. Some people think that the angle between the strata does not integrate or overreach; others say that the fracture changes.
