Peru is the third largest hydropower reservoir in Latin America, second only to Brazil and Colombia, with a total of more than 60,000 MW, but only 5% or 3,000 MW of them have been developed. In order to ameliorate the situation, the Peruvian government has taken various legal and economic measures to stimulate the development of new hydropower projects and strive to increase the generation of various types of renewable energy. In the first domestic tender for Renewable Energy (RER) projects, 17 hydropower projects of less than 20 MW were selected. An overview of the state of the electricity system in Peru was made and an overview of the construction of the 19.2 MW Qian Kai Project under construction and the progress of the construction were presented.
