The “Chinese Woman in Manhattan” caused a sensation in mainland China in the early 1990’s, set off a wave of immigration in the United States, made a significant impact on the image of the United States in the construction of Chinese narrative, and caused considerable controversy among the literary critics. Today’s re-examination of this work, through its comparison with two other novels about the similar story, “Go to the United States, Go to the United States,” and “The Workplace of Wall Street,” give a glimpse into the trend of popular literature and art in the 1980s and 1990s The trend of “elegance and vulgarity”, and the thought trajectory of new Chinese immigrants emerging from the “Chinese identity” anxiety and the establishment of “world citizenship” in the new century.
