地铁是快捷、舒适、安全的交通工具。自英国伦敦1863年1月开通世界第一条地铁以来,目前共有53个国家137座城市运营着地铁、轻轨等轨道交通系统,总里程达1.1万公里。其中欧洲拥有量最多,占41%。伦敦、纽约、东京的城市地铁线路均超过300公里，成为市民出行的主要l交通工具（表1）。
