The incidence of ectopic pregnancy has increased significantly over the past two decades, but the cause of one third of the patients is unknown. This article reports on the incidence of ectopic pregnancy in nurses and various occupational related survey results. The survey was conducted in 18 hospitals in Paris from 1987 to 1988. The subjects were two groups of women: one was a staff member other than a doctor in the operating room and the other was a nurse who was matched by hospital, sex, age and length of service in other departments. The survey included the status of each of these women’s pregnancies and occupational exposures during the first trimester, including childbirth, natural or induced abortion and ectopic pregnancies. The latter included exposure to anesthetic gases, formaldehyde solution, ionizing radiation, and resistance Oncology drugs. The analysis included only 734 singleton pregnancies among first-time pregnant nurses after 1970, with 15 (2%) ectopic pregnancies.
