Objective To investigate the effect of astragalus on postoperative epidural scar adhesion. Methods Twenty-two New Zealand rabbits underwent L2 and L5 laminectomy, removed some of the ligamentum flavum, exposed fat, and removed epidural fat, divided into two groups: group A was astragalus group; group B was saline group, respectively Astragalus solution and physiological saline were injected into L2 and L5 defect areas, and light microscopy and lens observations were taken at 2, 4 and 8 weeks after surgery. Results The inflammatory cells in the Astragalus membranaceus group had less oozing, fewer fibroblasts, less collagen fibers, no epidural scars, and no degeneration and demyelination of the spinal cord and nerve roots. The epidural scar adhesion was obvious in the saline group. Conclusion Astragalus has no neurotoxicity and can be used as a good material to prevent postoperative epidural scar adhesion.
