By examining the classic discourse on the relationship between the original text and the translated text in Chinese and foreign traditional translations, this article reveals the human cognition of translation in the period of traditional translation. The study found that translation originated from imitation, and the relationship between imitation and imitation was between the translation and the original. According to the imitation types proposed by Liu Zhiji in the Tang Dynasty, the article classifies the imitation relations between the translation and the original texts, and makes possible explanations for the formation of each kind of imitation relations by means of the cultural context concept. This paper argues that the imitative relationship between the translation and the original reflects the primitive and basic human understanding of translation during the period of the traditional translation.
