Since the reform and opening up, our country has attracted a large amount of foreign direct investment. The gradual expansion of foreign direct investment, while promoting the rapid economic development in our country, has also brought about an increase in the amount of carbon dioxide emissions and aggravated the deterioration of the natural environment in our country. Since FDI in different places has great differences in investment purposes, industrial structure and energy efficiency, their effects on China’s carbon emissions are also different. Using the data from 1986 to 2013, this paper uses time series analysis to test the impact of FDI on carbon emissions in China from different sources. The results of the analysis show that foreign direct investment from Europe, the United States, Japan and South Korea is not strongly correlated with China’s carbon emissions, while foreign direct investment from Hong Kong, Maucao and other regions has a significant correlation with China’s carbon emissions.
