Another giant drill-to-ground bomb is about to be born, and it will become the largest conventional bomb in the world, more than ten times as powerful as the most heavily bomber-borne U.S. military service. On August 2, 2009, a Pentagon spokesman announced that the U.S. military might use the bomb after a year. The media generally think this is a warning to underground nuclear facilities in North Korea and Iran, but people also worry that this will pose a threat to world peace. Even in the United States, on August 3, some people expressed strong opposition to the government’s aggressive and militaristic move. China’s military expert Dai Xu pointed out on August 4 that in the context of the financial crisis, the U.S. move “is irresponsible to taxpayers all over the world.” An online survey of Global Sources on August 4 showed that as many as 91% of voters think that the United States is again developing a large bomb and that “it should be severely condemned.”
