Nuclear-pumped lasers Sandia National Laboratory in the United States is conducting a nuclear-powered pumping system study of lasers to determine the feasibility of such weapons as a strategic and tactical defense mission. Falcon (Fission Excited Laser Principle) lasers utilize the energy of U 235 fission fragments in small pulse reactor systems to excite gas atoms or molecules to produce intense laser radiation. The US Department of Defense Military Office is running a multi-million-dollar Falcon program that serves Star Wars and other military applications. Sandia has been able to demonstrate Falcon lasers with U ~ (235) fission fragments, unlike other nuclear explosion excitation lasers,
