In 1974, to ensure routine global vaccination efforts, the World Health Organization (WHO) began scaling up its immunization program. For the first time, six vaccine-preventable diseases were identified as the main targets: tuberculosis, poliomyelitis (polio), diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis and measles. In 1974, <5% of infants worldwide completed full immunization. In 2005, the third dose of Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertusis Combined Vaccine (DTP) (DTP3) was 79%, but many children in low-income countries did not reach this level.
