This article explores several aspects of the intrinsic self-awareness of John Doe’s later masterpiece Meditations on the Margins of Life and Death. The author believes that Dorn’s self-awareness, full of human and divine intertwined. At the critical moment of critical illness, the humanist as an individual gradually wears off his self-consciousness, showing mainly four dynamic characteristics: passiveness, self-examination, self-esteem and superhumanity. At the same time, Dorn’s self-awareness is also linked to his inner identity. These different identities promote and enhance the progress of Dorn’s self-awareness in different aspects, making “Meditations” transcend the life experience of individual meaning and bring enlightenment to readers in a deeper and broader aspect.
