Like the electric power industry that is the foundation of the U.S. economy, the U.S. wire and cable industry has matured and certain developments are in good conditions. If manufacturers gradually shift their attention to emerging technologies and high-growth submarkets, they must be large in order to avoid financial disasters. Reorganization and integration on a scale are less satisfactory. The industry is highly cyclical and closely linked to the GNP, which has lost its resilience during the previous economic recession. The previous recovery process indicated that only part of the capacity was revitalized. The sluggish copper price and the attendant reduction in gross profit have caused the sales volume to gradually decrease; however, the industry has felt that the market is more important than the input price. The many factors that led to an effective leveling out of any significant future growth in the industry as a whole have led to a long-term recession in the basic markets on which wire and cable relied (light economic cover up). The “process” that has been achieved is that the wire and cable lines for telephones and electricity have been laid all over the country, especially electricity.
