The Italian scholar and politician Luigi Behringer put forward in his recent book, Recreating All People’s Quality Education School, that education and training must belong to everyone. In an interview with Scrantino, editor of the English version of Diogenes, he gave an in-depth explanation of the role of the humanities and culture in contemporary education. In his view, culture and humanities have always been synonymous, and culture has been embodied through the humanities. Humanities, as a high-level knowledge inherently lacking in utility, is dominated by the elite. In order for the humanities to become a humanistic knowledge that belongs to everyone, we must imagine a new way of teaching humanistic knowledge. This is a question of general education, the question of how to be a human being, and the question of the survival of university education as it is still too often confined to the boundaries of various disciplines. Culture must not remain proprietary to the intellectual elite, who act merely as contributors to the historical development of a society. To be a social and historical force, culture must be injected into all people. At the same time, local cultures and languages must be integrated into a globalized educational path. In the liberal arts, to break the identity barriers, Europeans must go abroad to study outside universities in Europe.
