杨爱立是中国20世纪20年代颇具影响力的电影明星。她在美国出生,接受西式教育,刚成年时回国后被当时新兴的电影业吸引。起初,她成功饰演了洋派的新女性,但当时新女性形象的发展空间非常逼仄,她的戏路被渐渐窄化为风骚浪女。看不到发展前景的杨爱立离开上海回到美国,试图在好莱坞觅得一席之地,但好莱坞留给华人女性的角色只有流莺和反派。失落的杨爱立只能在酒吧和剧场中表演中国风情,37岁时死于肺炎。杨爱立的从影经历坎坷曲折,一生都在不断寻觅行走。她的生平提供了一个典型的个案,让我们能够看到曾经被隔离在不同文化时空中的历史和地方,怎么样以一种艰难曲折的姿态,逐渐勾连、拼贴出一个全球化视域下的世界版图。杨爱立并不是一个成功的影星,但她的行走和表演,体现了一种积极寻求交流和认同的力量。
