Rigid polyurethane foam, originally developed by Sandia National Laboratories as a refractory filler for electronic components, can now be used to prevent mud from leaking from the wellbore into the surrounding rock during drilling. To find ways to do this, scientists at Sandia, Poly Plug, NL Baroid and Geothermal Federation are experimenting with the foam and a 30-foot aluminum placement tool. The tool is located in the hole at the end of the drill string. When placed close to the expected loss zone, the separately filled chemicals are forced into the mixing chamber by the circulation pressure of the slurry, where they react to create a foam which, as it exits through the outlet at the bottom of the tool The volume can swell seven times, then the foam enters the crack.
