近年美术史写作正在由通史体例向重视个案和专题研究转变,体现出更加深入和多元探索的特点。郑岩《逝者的面具:汉唐墓葬艺术研究》是这方面的佼佼者,该书主张更完整、更仔细、更深入地阅读墓葬材料,将墓葬放置在更大的历史文化背景下来理解其内部的各种元素和外部的各种联系,这种研究方法的探索和完善,突破了传统美术史的写作框架,为我们提供了重新观察、梳理、整合中国古代墓葬艺术的新视角,由此有可能触及一种属于所有人的美术史,美术史不再只被理解为一种学科史,而成为更具普遍意义的文化史。
