Oxygen is found in nature as an element and, together with fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine (halogen), is one of the five strongest elemental oxidizers. In most cases, the reaction of oxygen is slow or completely non-reactive, but in other cases it becomes extremely lively, releasing energy at high rates as it reacts with the fuel. It is this reactivity that becomes a major cause of particular concern when designing metal components for use in oxygen environments. Under certain conditions, the elemental oxygen and fluorine as well as the fluorine-oxygen mixture (FLOX) have the same characteristics and behave similarly: (1) an oxide film that prevents further reaction can be formed on the metal,
