This paper, from the perspective of the relationship between order and freedom, conducts a textual reading of the Journey to the West and proposes that the Journey to the West recreates and discusses the paradox of order and freedom in the deep consciousness of man by way of literature. Sun Wukong “Havoc in Heaven” is the result of the conflict between its free will and order concept and the actual order of the temple. Afterwards, taking the path is the hope of regaining the order of the temple. Sun Wukong’s pursuit of freedom embodies a positive and negative dialectical development process, and Buddhahood means his success in regaining freedom and naturalization. It is the spiritual projection of the dilemma that mankind is caught in the cracks between order and freedom in the novel’s self-contradiction in value orientation.
