Shortly after the liberation of Shanghai, a reporter of Xinmin Evening News wrote a close-up titled “Nanjing Road is the Essence of Shanghai.” After the manuscript was posted, the editorial department received a letter from a reader expressing different opinions on the formulation: “Old Shanghai is a city of extravagant consumption, Nanjing Road, a lot of dross, today called the essence of Shanghai, I think inappropriate. I hope after your newspaper to introduce us to Shanghai’s industrial production, labor and other aspects ... ...” Signature is “a reader.” Chao Chao, head of the editorial department, concluded from the handwriting that this letter is out of the hand of the mayor of Chen Yi. Because such words are generally not written in brush writing, plus the words “Shanghai People’s Government” are printed on letterheads and envelopes, which confirms that the guess is correct.
