籽粒苋为苋科苋属(Amaranthus)植物,是粮食、蔬菜和饲料兼用作物。籽粒苋种子营养价值高,籽粒中蛋白质含量达14-17%,赖氨酸含量0.92一1.02%,可作为食品添加物与小麦粉等混合,制作高营养食品,如饼干、面包、糖、婴儿食品等。苋的籽粒和茎叶亦可作为优质畜禽饲料,幼嫩茎尖和叶片是一种美味蔬菜。美国农业部对籽粒苋的开发利用十分重视,已培育出一系列优良品种,种植面积逐年扩大。高产优质的籽粒苋品种有“平原人”、“东阿马多”、“蒙大拿3号、5号”、“K432”、“K436”、“K343”等。
