智力是这样一些能力的组合,这些能力使人们成功地达到其所确定的目标,不管这些目标是什么,也不管他们处在什么样的环境中(但必须是一个真实的而不是仅仅为了证明这一定义的不可靠性而臆造出来的环境)。这些组合能力在某个心理活动理论中被定义过,后来成为智力理论的一个组成部分。说某人具有某一水平的能力也即是说当他或她在处于所定义的组合程序中能够达到某种速度、精确度、适合度的水准。能力有两种类型。一是诸如心智速度、智能,以及再现精度(保持、回忆的常数)的能力。这种能力在目前还无法通过短时间的教育和自我训练加以提高。根据定义来看,能力可以受操作和练习的影响,但我对此完全持保留意见。非实践性的能力是智力
