Nynex officials are optimistic about the company’s plans to build the world’s longest submarine cable. This optimism emerged after Nynex’s meeting in Orlando last May, which was attended by potential users and countries that were landing sites on the huge submarine line. This project is called the fiber optic circuit (FLAG) around the earth and is worth US$1 billion. It is expected to be completed in 1996. FLAG required the construction of 24,135 kilometers (15,000 miles) of fiber optic cable to connect the United Kingdom and Japan through the Indian Ocean. Nynex will share the project with investors from Japan and Middle East countries. The planned construction of fiber optic cable will transmit information at 5Gh/s and be provided on two pairs of optical fibers
