《鲁宾逊漂流记》(Robinson Crusoe)在英国兴盛一时,传入中国后亦家喻户晓,但实际上,享有如此盛名的仅仅是第一部,续集作品为The Farther Adventures of Robinson Crusoe,一般翻译为《鲁宾逊漂流续记》以及被译为Serious Reflections of Robinson Crusoe的《真诚的感想》,这两部鲜有人知。在《续记》中,鲁宾逊到中国游历,在书中,作者叙述中国经济落后,人民愚昧而且傲慢,作者从没有来过中国,对中国的评价完全来自于在西方的认知且通过作品演绎。在19 Robinson Crusoe, once popular in the United Kingdom and well-known once in China, actually enjoyed only the first of its kind, with the sequel to The Farther Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, generally translated as Robinson Crusoe and Serious Reflections of Robinson Crusoe’s “Sincere Feelings,” little known of both.
