直流架线变频交流电机车是采用交流传动的窄轨架线式矿用电机车。目前该电机车已在国内城市地铁、隧道施工,矿山和冶金等行业的运输系统中得到广泛应用。ZK系列直流电机车是上世纪50年代设计的老产品,长期以来,没有对其进行较大的技术改进,存在机车牵引力小;电阻调速方式落后、耗能高;直流牵引电动机故障率高、维护费用成本高;机械制动系统空行程长,操作不方便,制动效果差;齿轮箱润滑和密封效果差、齿轮使用寿命短等突出问题。而交流传动电机车采用了感应式异步电动机,其结构简单,运行可靠,直流电机无整流子,无测速装置,克服了直流电机滑环产生火花,易磨损等不利因素,具有故障率低、使用寿命长、维修量小、使用方便等优点。
