周胜,广东湛江人,1967年出生于一个教师家庭,从童年起对绘画就表现出浓厚的兴趣。初中时有一次发现用铅笔在厚纸上打侧锋写字,有一种近似水墨渲染的效果,受此启发,遂开始用此方法作画,结果,他用铅笔画出的竹子、小虫受到同学们的宠爱。到了高三毕业那年,当同学们都要求周胜在他们的毕业留念册上画上他当时最拿手的竹子时,周胜想到兴许这种画法今后可以推广。也就从那时起,周胜一直未曾间断练习铅笔画,直到大学毕业,当他把自己的铅笔画制成书签赠给学友们留念,再次获得大家的喜爱和认可后,周胜才下定决心在铅笔画上寻出点儿名堂来。
