War, especially the modern war, is by no means merely a contest of military power. It is also affected and restricted by many other factors. The role of economic power is particularly important. As Comrade Mao Tse-tung pointed out: “War is not only a military and political contest, but also an economic race.” Therefore, to study the war we must study the war economy. Japan was the initiator of the Sino-Japanese War and the Pacific War during the Second World War. It was ambitious and sought to dominate Asia and the world. However, compared with its ambition to dominate, its economic strength is obviously insufficient. Thus, during the war, Japan had to mobilize all its economic forces to serve the war to the fullest extent, thereby making the Japanese economy during World War II a classic war
