20世纪20年代,由张禹卿创立的滇剧旦角竹(八音)派艺术,是滇剧的一个独具特色的艺术流派。1945年,万象贞师从张禹卿学唱滇剧旦角,取名为“小八音”。她是张禹卿在解放前最后收下的一个徒弟。几十年来,万象贞演出的滇剧《京娘送兄》、《烤火下山》、《荷花配》、《借亲配》等一大批剧目,噪音醇厚,韵味独特,表演细腻传神,形成了自己独特的艺术风格,使竹派艺术得以继承、创新和发展。1988年,万象贞收青年滇剧旦角演员冯咏梅为徒,向她传授技艺。冯咏梅在滇剧舞台上塑造了宦娘、京娘、西施等女性人物形象,她的声腔,继承和发扬了滇剧旦角竹派委婉柔美的艺术风格,从而成为竹派艺术的后起之秀。
In the 1920s, the art of bamboo dramas created by Zhang Yuqing was a unique genre of art in Yunnan opera. Her accent inherits and develops the gentle and graceful artistic style of the bamboo dramas of the Dian Opera, thus becoming a rising star of bamboo school.
