沈阳西站是东北路网的最大编组站,也是全国大型路网性编组站之一,是东北地区沟通关内外铁路运输的主要交通枢纽。站场布置为双向二级六场,设计改编能力为12,000辆。下行编组场为半自动化驼峰。峰下设三个部位车辆减速器,进行车辆的间隔和目的制动。编组线股道内仍采用铁鞋进行制动。 该站新建的上下行编组场,1984年先后投产使用。铁道部第三设计院1982年10月的设计文件规定,上行编组场按半自动化驼峰设计,下行编组场按机械化驼峰设计,预留发展半自动化及自动化条件,上下行驼峰头部设两级制动位,第一制动位采用T·JK型减速器(5+5节),第二制动位采用T·JK型减速器(6+6节),上行车场第三制动位采用7501型减速器(6+6节)并预留第四制动位。远期第四制动位出口后实现自动化时,原则上按加速设备考虑。下行车场预留第三制动位,编组场内装没脱鞋器,上行编组场设一排,下行编组场设两排。
